How many times have seen it done or maybe even done it yourself? In the mist of all the crowd, smoke, and sound, is the concert lights highlighting many arms up in the air; all doing the the traditional horns of rock n roll salute. This traditional horns of rock n roll salute is a sign that is known throughout the world. Have you ever stop and wonder, what the hell does it even mean? Some people claim its the devil's sign while others, simply say it a form of expression signifying their love of music. Still others feel they need to take a good look at what is really being said when someone uses such a sign. Lets take a quick look of how this came to be.

If you're into metal, than many of you will remember a particular artist that made this gesture, a part of his live preformance. (I know many of you will say that Motley Crue had it first on their album cover of Too Fast for Love; but I don't think the Crue used to the extent Dio did, at that time. Of course they did later.) Now getting back to Dio.

Ronnie James Dio recently spoke out in regards to the frequent over use of the "devils horns" sign that he claims to have invented. While I wish not to get into a debate on whether or not he did in fact invent the sign I think, Ronnie has bought up a very important point. With the younger generation flashing it around every chance they get, its seems to be diminishing the impact of the metal hand gesture. "It was a symbol of darkness… not something to be passed on to BRITNEY SPEARS!" stated Ronnie.
Dio also expressed concern that incorrect technique also appears to be propagating."You'll notice that a lot of people are using the thumb now" he noted, "When the thumb comes out, it means 'I love you' in either Hawaiian or sign language — I'm not sure which." Back in the old days the metal sign was a very sacred symbol which was used only for special occasion but with the vagrant overuse Ronnie feels it is losing it's impact.

If you have been to see a Dio gig you will have noticed that he will wait until 2-3 songs before he breaks out the symbol, waiting for the most opportune moment where it would get maximum effect "There has to be some emotion behind it… It might sound stupid but I never once did that on stage unless it was to punctuate something that was a little more dark." Ronnie is obviously a master of the technique and maybe the younger generation should take heed of his message and consider the usage of the devils horns a bit more in prospect.

Going back further in time; we find out that this gesture was truly used by the deaf. One person in particular, that brought this sign to a larger scale, is the infamous deaf mute, Helen Keller. Keller was credited as the person who invented/created this hand sign to express the words "I Love You."

Many Bible bashers, though claim that this sign in itself was derived from earlier times of Pagan/Wicca secrecy, during which, witches would identify each other by giving the "Satanic salute".

This was a sign of recognition between themselves and allegiance of members of Satanism or other unholy groups, or so it is said. Many evangelist further believe that Helen Keller was herself an occultist and Theosophist. Did Keller purposely design the deaf's "I love you" sign to be such a remarkable imitation of the classic sign of Satan? Was Keller saying, basically, "I love you, Devil?" Lets continue to look into this classic sign.

Jesus Christ is often referred to as the Lamb in the bible. It is a well known fact, "Satan", as referred to by Christians, is the opposite of Christ; often mocking him in an opposite manner. Jesus representing good and Satan representing evil. Jesus is the light, while Satan is the darkness. While Jesus sits on the right side of God, Satan took the left stance. As 777 is said to represent the prefect trinity of God, Jesus and the Holy Ghost, 666 is said to represent the number of the beast. Which beast does Satan represent or in our case, vice versa. Which beast represents Satan?

Anton does however get it right on this next picture which was taken from the back pages of the Satanic Bible.

There are three versions of the "El Diablo," the sign of Satan, the horned god. The hand sign at right is also the deaf’s gesture, or signing, for "I love you,". It is said, that the correct way to display this salute in an evil manner, is by using the Left hand, while the thumb goes under the two fingers to signify a Satanic alliegance; or the the thumb can go above the two fingers to signify a Pagan/Wiccan alliegance.

"We Satanists are our own Gods, and we are the explorers of the Left-Hand Path. We do not bow down before the myths and fictions of the desiccated spiritual followers of the Right-Handed Path." This is a quote from the Satanic Bible. Now if this is a way of identifying a fellower follower, I seriously doubt that it is working. After all, who can really tell; or more over; who really paying attention. Certainly not the majority of the people that do the damn sign. So in reality, is this sign really a way of identifying a person with a certain belief? I really don't think that the the majority of horns saluteters all share the same beliefs or ideologies ? If anything; I believe its more of an expression than anything. More of a way to express a mood.

Take for instance Harley Clark. Begun in 1955, the `Hook 'em Horns' sign started by Harley Clark still motivates UT fans today. Is it mere coincidence that every Satanist in the world uses the same hand salute? Or is it that all of the UT LongHorns and their fans have a secrecey of some sort.. Think about it. If you start to look at anything, you can find a connection somehow or somewhere. Anything can be made to look as though its all related. All in all, the facts presented here are here for you to decide. I personally I feel there is no harm in doing such. For me, it is just another form or way to express my moods. So in summary, I will continue to use the "horns sign", along with the "#1 finger" sign, or the fuck you "middle finger" sign, or the "hang loose" thumb and pinky sign, or the "flick a booger" at you sign, or the "half" mochate sign...etc...
